Managing your incontinence

Does your pad leak?

When it comes to bladder weakness, leakage protection is a high priority. But sometimes, you can find yourself in a potentially embarrassing situation where the pad has leaked, or you find it’s just not doing the job you need it to and this can mean a significant inconvenience. Here’s some handy tips to help prevent leakage, feel secure and get on with life.

Ensure you have the right size

A pad that doesn’t fit you correctly will leak. For example, if you use a pull up style pad like MoliCare Premium Mobile, being too large will cause it to be loose fitting and cause leakage. If too small, the pad can stretch and contort, damaging the absorbent core and cause leakage. Think of it like needing a good fitting pair of underwear.

To check your size:

• Measure your waist. Measure the widest part between your waist and hips.

• Refer to the sizes listed on the pack or

Check you have the right absorbency

Pads come in multiple absorbency levels. If you experience light bladder weakness where only drips or dribbles occur, a lower absorbency pad will suit your needs. If you experience complete bladder loss, a high absorbency pad is required.

To help find the best absorbency for your needs:

• Refer to the droplets on the MoliCare packs or

Is the pad applied correctly?

Some pads are easier than others to apply. Depending on the style of pad, there are a few things you can check to get maximum leakage protection such as:

  1. Leak guards – The leak guards are found in the inner leg of the pad and when upright, prevent leakage by redirecting fluid back to the centre of the pad. Ensure they are they in the right place and not flat?
  2. Leg cuffs/frills – are they covering the leak guards? If they are this will cause leakage, so move them so they sit outwards and not inwards towards the pad.
  3. Adjusting tabs – Tabs can be moved into better positions to get the right fit.

Check the wetness indicator

Some pads have wetness indicators to help see when to change a pad. The indicator is in coloured ink on the back of the pad that will smudge or disappear as it becomes wet. When the MoliCare wetness indicator reaches ¾ (or ¾ smudged out), it’s time to change.
